This MINI came in as it was using too much oil and the customer had to top the oil up frequently. This is a common issue with the Peugeot/BMW engine.
Initial thoughts was to source a replacement engine but as there are a lot of bad engines out there we decided, along with the customers input, to rebuild the current engine.
This is the Peugeot/BMW engine - the bores glaze up and the piston rings do not seal correctly. The engine starts to burn oil and damages the engine internals.
We removed the cylinder head and sump to assess the pistons. We removed all 4 pistons and found the rings to be worn. We de-glazed all 4 cylinders and refitted the pistons with new rings and big end bearings.
We re-lapped all 16 valves and replaced the stem oil seals. We also had the cylinder head pressure tested and re skimmed
We refitted the cylinder head with new gaskets. Rebuild up using new valve stem oil seals and fitted a new timing chain. We replaced the old spark plugs and fitted a new MAP sensor. The engine oil was renewed along with a new oil filter.
We carried out extensive road tests over a couple of days, all tests went well and the car was good to go.
