Landrover Defender 90 with badly deteriorated cambelt

This vehicle was undergoing routine servicing maintenance and it was identified that the vehicle had no recorded evidence of a cambelt renewal.

The customer was consulted who confirmed that to their knowledge the cambelt had not been previously replaced and approved the repair.

On carrying out the cambelt replacement it was found that the original belt was degraded to a state of self-destruction (As seen in the images).

If the cambelt had totally failed and snapped, which would have been inevitable, then this would have resulted in extensive engine damage and an expensive repair.

Under most circumstances cambelts cannot be visually checked during routine servicing as they are protected by engine covers that are not easily accessible/or removed.

This is a good example of why recommended cambelt replacements should not be ignored.
