E-Type Jaguar

A beautiful E-type Jaguar waiting for calipers

This E-type Jaguar was causing the driver issues when braking hard. The front brake effort appeared not to be working equally on both sides. After checking over the car and seeing that the brakes were in good condition it was decided to refurbish and service up both front brake calipers.

The job of brake calipers is that they have internal pistons inside the caliper assembly which when the brake pedal is applied help squeeze the brake pads against the surface of the brake discs to slow down or stop the car.

Overtime all calipers can wear out. When fitting new brakes to a car the caliper pistons can seize up making it sometimes impossible to fit new discs to the car. Years ago it was relatively easy to service up calipers but nowadays they are more complex and time consuming to refurbish. Nowadays it is easier and cost effective to simply replace the whole caliper. They still are quite expensive items as they are an intricate piece of engineering. As a garage you will never know for sure if you will need a caliper until everything is stripped down. We quite often give customers a worst case scenario if we think that the caliper currently fitted to their car might require replacing.

In this case, and because it is an E-type Jaguar, the existing calipers were refurbished using new pistons and seals. They were painted up and refitted to the vehicle.

Finally the car was put onto our rolling road to ensure that the brakes were equally efficient on both sides.

A beautiful classic car and much admired by all that saw it in our workshop.
