1972 Volkswagen Camper Van

Rebuilt Camper engine

This great looking 1972 VW Camper van was bought in due to it not starting. We could tell immediately that the fan belt had snapped causing the engine to seize up.

Once we had stripped down the engine we could see that piston number 2 had badly overheated causing it to expand in size and seize inside the barrel. We recommended to the customer to replace the complete set of barrels and pistons.

While the engine was removed the customer requested that we fit a up-rated sump and oil pump kit. This required a great deal of modification to the crossbeam to ensure that the pump was correctly fitted. We also had to re-route the throttle cable due to this modification.

We fitted a new set of spark plugs, carried out an oil and oil filter change, cleaned and set up the carburettors, timing etc. We fitted a larger capacity oil filter at this stage but had to modify the the oil filter mounting bracket to accept the larger oil filter.

The job was finally completed and the customer was happy to get his Camper van back. We suggested not to rev it too much so that the engine was given a chance to run in and to return for an oil and filter change in 500 miles.
