DAIMLER Majestic having a bit of an overhaul

All finished and ready to be returned
All finished and ready to be returned

This wonderful Daimler Majestic was collected from North Yorkshire to have a general checkover and to attend to some issues that the customer had noted.

The first task to attend to was that the radiator was in poor condition and leaking coolant. These radiators are very expensive to replace (if you can even track one down) so we removed it from the vehicle and despatched it for a recore and reconditioning. We refitted the radiator to the car and filled with fresh coolant, bleed through the cooling system, rechecked it all and the first job was completed.

We attended to various concerns with windows and door locks. We addressed the door locking issue easily enough.

The drivers front door window was a bit more of a challenge. We found the channels and rubbers in poor condition. The rubbers were replaced into the channels but this all required quite a lot of attention to get the new rubbers to sit snugly into the channels. The window now rolls up and down correctly.

The boot was not fitting correctly. The panels on a Majestic are hand made so can end up being slightly out of alignment as time goes by. We adjusted up the boot fitting by removing the liner and accessing the boot hinges. All tightened up and adjusted. The boot now closes correctly.

Now for the headache part of the job (as there always is on a classic vehicle)

The rear brakes were in poor condition and the hand brake was ineffective. The rear calipers pistons were seized on due to corrosion and contamination and in turn had damaged the calipers. We stripped down the brakes and found that the hub seal was leaking. (this leak was the contamination on the calipers). We fitted new hub seals. We removed the calipers and despatched for reconditioning and refurbishment and to have stainless steel linings fitted. We replaced the service brake pad and the rear brake pads. We had to modify the locking device that was missing from the caliper. We then set up the braking system and all worked perfectly. The front brakes required servicing up and new brake pipes fabricating and fitting to all calipers. We cleaned everything up. Finally we carried out a brake fluid renewal. All brakes are now amazingly efficient.

The gear box was topped up to the correct levels

General maintenance was carried out to the vehicle while it was in the work shop including greasing, lubricating, replacing various nuts, bolts and washers etc.

All in all a nice job to do on what is quite a magnificent vehicle.
