Noisy engine on a mercedes B class

Photo

This 2011 Mercedes B class was recovered in due to non starting. When checking over the starting system the engine appeared to be locked or jammed. We were puzzled as the car is a 2011 model with low mileage on it.

We contacted Mercedes who gave us some pointers as to what the cause could be.

They advised us that it may well be the shroud of the starter motor coming away and jamming in the flywheel. Unfortunately to get to the starter motor you have to remove the whole engine. A huge task to do.

After speaking at length to the customer and weighing up what their options were we decided that the engine had to come out to locate the fault.

We removed the whole engine and found that the shroud or surround of the starter motor had indeed broken up and had jammed inside the flywheel.

We replaced the broken starter motor with a new modified starter motor and refitted the engine.

We turned the key and it started first time perfectly - phew!

A huge job to do and for the amount of work we had to do it was a reasonable cost.
